What’s Your Favorite Color?

I’ll be honest: 2020 is getting off to a slow start! 2019 was exhausting in so many ways. I took time off after Christmas to rest and putter, which helped, but any sort of art has been too much for my tired brain. I’m just beginning to get back into a routine.

To ease into the new year, I am painting scarves. The process I’ve developed for the scarves is quiet and meditative. The colors take time to work, so I place them and watch and wait. Magic happens in those slow moments. I cannot rush or the scarf is ruined.

Being watchful during process has allowed me to be productive in a gentle way. Exactly what I need right now.

For each scarf, I have to choose a color combination: watery blues, cozy browns, sparkling brights, soft pastels.

It reminds me of when the world was young and so was I. My grandmother asked me what my favorite color was.

Little kids usually know their favorite color straight way, without hesitation: pink, purple, blue, especially. One of my nephews was fond of orange and green for a long time. All good choices.

I remember thinking about it, then telling her that I liked all of them. I couldn’t leave any out.

What I didn’t know was that she wanted to make me an afghan in a color I liked. Several months later, the afghan arrived in lots of colors!

I loved it then and love it now. Decades later, it’s still on my bed year round, both for warmth and decoration.

Even today, I am hard pressed to choose one color as a favorite.

What’s your favorite color? Do you have just one?
