A Rose Is A Rose Is A Rose

A Rose Is A Rose Is A Rose, collage, by Karen KochSeveral of the pieces in the Envelope series are studies in contrasts, and this is one of them. I love the elegant old-fashioned women peeking out from their gilded frames. Clearly they were women of means at their time, so I surrounded them with flowers.

Yet despite their privileges, their life wasn’t easy. They were kept and cultivated as if they were delicate flowers themselves, and faced limitations imposed on them. So I wrapped them in delicately colored papers that remind me of flower petals, and shielded them with a tattered fringe along the top.

“A rose is a rose is a rose is a rose” was a phrase made famous by Gertrude Stein to mean “things are what they are”.
