Three Little Sketches

watercolor sketch of sheep at winerywatercolor sketch of cabo san lucas mexicoOn Saturday, I took a Travel Journal painting class with Nicki Lanzi over at the Peninsula Art Academy. Nicki demonstrated her technique for doing watercolor sketches of her travels and then we did some of our own. We worked from photos, but learned techniques that we can use as we’re on location.

I took a photo of the beach in Cabo San Lucas, one of the mailbox of the house I grew up in California, and one of a sheep outside a winery in Napa.

The mailbox might not seem like much, but my dad made it and I have fond memories of checking the mail to see if I had any letters. I also have a photo of me at about the age of 3 standing next to it. The photo I worked from is a recent one I took in 2009 when I had a chance to visit the old place.

Watercolor is a medium I rarely use, since I find it intimidating, but Nicki made it very approachable. I love the look of pen sketches with watercolor washes but have never tried it. I’m happy with the results and want to do more of them so that I’m ready for my next trip, wherever it might be.
