Collage Techniques Class

Collage Techniques is a class I teach frequently, both at my studio and at other venues.

Tree of Life, collage, in progress, Karen KochBeginning students as well as experienced artists enjoy this collage sampler. Even if you have made collages before, it’s a fun way to try new textures, media, and materials. Learn to play with these media and express yourself in your own unique way.

Session 1:

  • Week 1 – Cut and Paste: Introducing Elements of Collage
  • Week 2 – Altered And Transferred Images
  • Week 3 – The Written Word: Using Text in Art
  • Week 4 – Pulling It Together

Session 2:

The focus of this session will be working in a series. You will choose a theme or topic, then explore that theme in a series of collages. (Possible themes could be travel, family, gardens, holidays, couture, retro, geometric shapes, doorways, landscapes – the list is endless!)

Attending session 1 is helpful but not required. You won’t be lost if you start with this session.

  • Week 1 – Repeat That: using stencils, stamps, and patterns
  • Week 2 – Layering, glazes, resists
  • Week 3 – Unusual backgrounds
  • Week 4 – Pulling It All Together

Session 1 begins on Tuesday, October 16 at 7pm. It will run 4 weeks and will be held in Shaker Hts. As far as I know, there is still space available. For more info, to go:

The supply list for both sessions is the same. I bring plenty of supplies with me, as well, and we all tend to share.

  • Small bottle of ModPodge or Liquitex Matte Medium
  • Watercolor or mixed media paper (Canson, Strathmore), between 7×10 and 11×14 inches
  • Various colorful papers, magazines, junk mail, magazines, old books or maps, postage stamps, tissue. We will cut up the papers, so make copies of anything that is sentimental or precious. DON’T buy anything. Bring what you find around the house.
  • Sharpie, pencil, ruler
  • Scissors
  • 1 or 2 cheap flat brushes for gluing (one small ¼ inch and one larger 1 inch). If you don’t
have brushes at home, use mine for the first class and I will show you what to buy for
    the remaining classes.
