Excavate. Investigate. Re-create.
In this exhibit titled Reverse Archaeology, my friend Shannon Casey and I have created a series of artworks to explore layers of time and memory. Those themes have reoccurred in our artwork over the past few years and we wanted to delve further into them.
We call this exhibit Reverse Archaeology because not only are we digging into the past – what was – we are also looking toward the future – what will be.
This show celebrates the archeologist in all of us – the child seeking treasure, the adult mining memories, artifacts that define us and the threads that connect a family. We look at the past – what was – in order to project what will be.
Reverse Archeology deals with the concept of discovery. This may mean finding something of value just beneath our feet, or something hidden within layers of memory. The process may be physical or the search may be internal and reflective. Or it may exist in the realm of imagination.
The artwork we have chosen for this show includes paintings, collages, and three-dimensional objects. Into the work are woven vintage artifacts, symbols and hidden meanings, personal history, and even local lore.
In this show, we challenged ourselves to explore the layers of time and memory … and we encourage viewers to do the same.
